Alabama Cultural Information
WELCOME TO
Alabama
Beauty, history, culture and adventure all come together in “Sweet Home Alabama”. It’s a place where each meal is a celebration, and each town has a story.
Alabama is rich in rural cultural traditions. Storytelling in particular has attracted the attention of folklore specialists, and quilt making is also a highly developed art. Sacred music, in the form of gospel ensembles and shape-note, or “fa-so-la,” singing, remains a vital part of Alabama’s cultural life. The experiences of rural life have contributed important elements to various genres of American popular music, including ragtime, jazz, and country music.
Alabama Motto
“Audemus jura nostra defendere” means “We Dare Maintain Our Rights” or “We Dare Defend Our Rights.” This was adopted in 1939 as Alabama state motto. The motto purpose was said to be “a phrase that would interpret the spirit of our peoples in a terse and energetic sentence.”
