The state motto of Maine is “Dirigo” which is Latin for “I Direct” or “I Lead”. The motto was adopted in the Summer of 1820.

Most Popular Sports in Maine.

Whitewater rafting has become a very popular sport in Maine, with many whitewater outfitters offering trips on the Kennebec, Penobscot and Dead Rivers. Maine is the only state in the Northeast that can guarantee water levels even during dry summers due to daily hydropower dam releases. Down-hill skiing and snowboarding are among the most popular winter sports in Maine.
