Nicknamed the “Bay State” due to state’s most famous bays, Cape Cod, where the Pilgrims first settled, its rich in colonial history.

Known most significantly for its role in the American Revolution, Massachusetts has several “firsts” throughout history, including the first state constitution. Massachusetts is also known for its diverse landscape, which includes mountains, forests, and coastal areas.

“Ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem” is the official motto of Massachusetts, which is Latin for “The sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty”.

  • The capital of Massachusetts is Boston, which was established in 1630, has been the capital of Massachusetts since its founding. It is the largest city in New England.

  • The state flag of Massachusetts is a white rectangular field bears on either side a representation of the arms of the Commonwealth, except that the star is white. State law also prescribes a naval and maritime flag, which bears a pine tree rather than the state seal, and a governor’s flag, which is triangular.

  • The state takes its name from the Massachusett tribe of Native Americans. The name has been translated as “at or about the Great Hill,” “great mountain place,” or “large hill place,” among other translations. It has adopted many nicknames such as “Bay State”, “Old Bay State”, “Pilgrim State”, “Puritan State” and “Old Colony State “due to its history in early English colonization

  • It is home to Harvard University in Cambridge, which is one of the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States. The university has educated eight Presidents of the United States while Harvard Law School has educated a contemporaneous majority of Justices of the Supreme Court of the United States.
