South Carolina is known for its tasty barbeque, peach production and the birthplace of sweet tea.
The state is divided into three regions. The upstate, anchored by the growing city of Greenville, is known for outdoor activities and quaint mountain towns. The Midlands (Piedmont) region is home to the state capital of Columbia and Lake Murray, a popular spot for fishing and boating.
South Carolina Motto
South Carolina has two state mottoes, both of which are Latin phrases with different meanings. “Animis Opibusque Parati”, which is considered the first state motto of South Carolina, means “prepared in mind and resources.” The second state motto of South Carolina is “Dum Spiro Spero”, which means “while I breathe, I hope.”

- Spoken Languages: English: 94.8%, Spanish or Spanish Creole: 2.9%, Other: 2.3%.
- Before South Carolina’s official nickname was the Palmetto State, it was known as the Iodine State. The state was the site of many important Civil War battles, including the very first one at Fort Sumter.
- Shaped roughly like a triangle, South Carolina is bordered by North Carolina in the north, the Atlantic Ocean in the east, and Georgia in the south and west. The state can be divided into three regions.
- South Carolina is known for its beaches, golf courses, historic museums, art scene and having great barbecues.
- Just outside the city of Charleston resides one of the country’s oldest living trees—The Angel Oak. Located on the beautiful Johns Island, this live oak is estimated to be around 500 years old and counting.
- South Carolina Has a Monkey Colony. Although the island is inaccessible to humans, you can take a boat out near the colony and catch a glimpse of the monkeys from a distance. The island is so unique that it’s actually the only place in the country where this species of monkey roams freely.

WHAT IS SOUTH CAROLINA FAMOUS FOR?
South Carolina is known for its delicious barbecue, which is a type of cooking that involves slow-cooking meat over fire. The most common type of barbecue in South Carolina is pork, and the state is home to many famous barbecue places. The South Carolina BBQ style involves slow cooking the hog as a whole, for 12 hours or longer over block pit of hot colas.

WHAT IS COOL ABOUT SOUTH CAROLINA?
The South Carolina State Fair is held annually in Columbia, South Carolina. It is the largest fair in the state and one of the largest in the country. The fair features a variety of attractions, including carnival rides, games, food, and live entertainment. There is also a rodeo, which is one of the most popular events at the fair.
