Virginia is known for its long and rich history. It is the birthplace of America, and there are plenty of historical sites around the state that commemorate important moments in history.

With a long history comes a lot of culture and tradition. And because of the state’s location on the East Coast, Virginia has been influenced by both Northern and Southern cultures.

Virginia Motto

Sic semper Tyrannis, meaning “Thus ever unto tyrants. This is the original motto recommended for the Seal of Virginia by George Mason to the Virginia Convention in 1776. It has no literary origin of note.

  • Virginia, officially the Commonwealth of Virginia, is a state in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern regions of the United States, between the Atlantic Coast and the Appalachian Mountains. At 42,774 square miles (110,784 km2), including 3,180.13 square miles (8,236.5 km 2) of water, making it the 35th- largest state by area.
  • Virginia shares borders with the states of Maryland, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, and West Virginia. The commonwealth state of Virginia also shares a border with Washington DC, which is technically not a state and has a coastline on the Atlantic Ocean as well.
  • The capital of the Commonwealth is Richmond; Virginia Beach is the most-populous city, and Fairfax County is the most-populous political subdivision. The Commonwealth’s population in 2020 was over 8.65 million, with 36% of them living in the Baltimore–Washington metropolitan area.

  • The Commonwealth of Virginia is divided into 95 counties, along with 38 independent cities that are considered county-equivalents for census purposes.
  • There are a total of 837 towns and cities in the state of Virginia. Top 10 biggest cities by population are Leesburg, Blacksburg, Herndon, Christiansburg, Culpeper, Vienna, Front Royal, Warrenton, Purcellville, and Pulaski.

The Pentagon, which is one of the most significant office buildings, is in Virginia. The building serves as the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense and is also a popular tourist attraction. The Pentagon is known for its unique shape. It is a five-sided polygon with five concentric rings and corridors radiating out from a central courtyard.
